After 170 years of service, a major restoration was needed to preserve theiconostasis of the Saint Barbara church and bring it back to its former glory. The specialists have worked for eleven months to reinforce the wooden structure, fill missing pieces in the sculpture, restore the paintings and re-gild all of it.
All week long, starting from November 29, 2021, the church will be closed because of the reinstallation of the restored historic iconostasis. For this reason, visitors will not be allowed to enter the church during this period. The church will reopen its doors on Saturday, December 3, at 2:00 p.m. Bishop of Vevey Vladyka Alexandre will bless the restored iconostasis on Thursday, December 16, at 5.30 p.m. before the celebration of vigils on the eve of the patronal feast.
This iconostasis was created for Princess Barbara Butera-Shouvalov by the order of Emperor Nikolai I back in 1845. It was installed in Vevey in 1878 after staying first in Palermo and then in Paris.
