Cleaning of the sanctuary’s painted decorations: a striking transformation

Hidden beneath nearly a century of accumulated soot and dust, the sanctuary’s painted decorations had gradually lost their colours and brilliance. Extensive cleaning work has now restored much of their original splendour.

A project carried out with care and expertise

Work began in January 2025 with a phase of meticulous trials conducted by the Vevey-based studio Sinopie. After several tests, the restorers selected a gel-based solution, applied in successive passes to remove dust deposits without damaging the works. Between February and April 2025, all walls, the starred ceiling, the arch intrados, and the window and door embrasures underwent thorough cleaning. The work was carried out in coordination with the Conservator of Monuments and Sites of the Canton of Vaud.

A rediscovered décor seen in a new light

“The result is spectacular,” underlines the final intervention report. The gilding of the paintings executed in 1878 by Genevan painter Joseph Benzoni once again reflects light with intensity. The starred vault ceiling, once almost entirely faded, reappears from the nave with renewed clarity, enhanced by the new lighting installed as part of the church’s lighting project. A control area has been preserved to recall the appearance of the décor before cleaning.

A first step towards a complete restoration of the painted décor

This work, carried out at a cost of approximately CHF 50,000, represents an important milestone. It also made it possible to identify weakened areas and alterations to the pictorial layer that will require further restoration. This next phase remains conditional on securing the necessary funding. This step marks a decisive milestone in the restoration project for the painted décor.
