Severely damaged by the storm of June 22, 2023, the century-old chestnut tree in the garden of Sainte-Barbara church had to be felled. An unavoidable decision, as the tree threatened to fall on the garden’s occupants and the railroad tracks.
However, Vevey’s municipal regulations require the tree to be replaced after a transition period sufficient to allow the soil to settle. After consultation, the head of green spaces advised us to choose a beautiful, original and resistant species, suitable for our temperate climate. A young Celtis Australis, 20 cm in diameter, was thus selected. The new tree will be planted on Friday, October 11, 2024, in the same spot as the previous chestnut tree.
