The Great Epitaphios/Plashchanitsa of St. Barbara’s Church, a piece of great historical and spiritual value, is currently undergoing urgent restoration. Very old and delicate, this sacred textile requires specialised intervention to ensure its preservation for future generations.
After several months of studies and consultations conducted in collaboration with experts from the Canton of Vaud’s Movable and Intangible Heritage Unit, the St. Barbara Church Foundation entrusted this mission to an internationally renowned textile art restorer.
The Great Epitaphios has been transferred to a specialised restoration workshop, where it will remain for an as yet undetermined period of time before being reinstalled in its place in the church.
A three-stage project
This restoration work is part of a larger project aimed at preserving the precious textiles in the church. It will take place in three phases:
- Restoration of the Great Epitaphios / Plashchanitsa (in progress)
- Restoration of the large liturgical banners
- Restoration of the vestment relics of St. John the Illuminator from the diaspora
